This largely timber-framed 16th century
inn with an odd mix of windows was a pub
even before it became a forge: observe
above the front door a swanwith two
necks sign at the door which may point
to its former name. It was possibly a
resting place on a drovers' route from
Wales to London. Inside its beamed
ceilings, carpeting, aquarium,
fashionable curtains, horse brasses and
an extensive collection of commemorative
spoons reflect the landlady's
personality and give a very homely
touch. The regulars who crowd its small
bar are knowledgeable about the
building's history as a forge (until
well into the 20th century), petrol
station and restaurant. Records go back
to 1535 but some roof trusses are
thought to be Saxon. Substantial
home-cooked food is available, except on
Monday evening in winter. In the summer
outdoor patio games including chess.
There is a heated cover for smokers.
Accommodation is available in separate
two bedroom bungalow.
